What is a man?

Passions of a Man Book Cover

My good friend Bill Amatneek is well on the way to publishing his second book. This time it’s an anthology of men’s stories that could only have been written by a man and that show women something of what it means to be a man.

Bill has issued a call for a single sentence beginning “A man is …” Responses are invited from both women and men.

I’m a writer, I thought,  I should be able to manage this. At first I came up with observations that are true enough, but true of all humans. Then I thought of characteristics of some, but by no means all, men.

It’s not an easy task! From a woman’s point of view, what is a man? Something both known and unknown, a partially-explored island with a volcano at its centre. Unmapped territory. (But isn’t this true of all other humans?) I’m hoping the book will provide some maps. And of course, an insight into a male point of view.

Here are some of the sentences submitted.

Authors of quotations to be used in the anthology will be contacted via e-mail, and will be paid $5.00 US for the quotation within 30 days of publication.

We’d prefer your original take on this sentence, and not the relaying of something your mom or dad told you, or was otherwise received rather than created by you.

Interesting. Looked at some of the responses. I couldn’t answer it though!
