Book Hive at Bristol Central Library

February 19, 2014

Book hive001

I had a little time to spare before an appointment at the Eye Hospital yesterday, and went to see this fabulous installation created by a team of robotics specialists, Rusty Squid, to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Library. Walk past the hive and the books open of their own accord with a lovely rustling sound. The effect is very much like a swarm of butterflies opening their wings. The books are a mixture of donated volumes and redundant library books, and none was harmed in the creation of this sculpture.

Thanks to Clare for sending me this link, which shows the sculpture in (inter)action.

It sounds so beautiful, I must try to get there before it finishes.

It is a big installation. Parts of it will be loaned to other libraries – it might even come to Glastonbury! Hope to see you at ABCD on Saturday.
